Über diesen Titel

In a world where hope is a luxury and exile a necessity, Pierre, a young Cameroonian, embarks on a treacherous clandestine journey to the United States through Latin America. Alongside Sharra, a young woman as determined as she is disillusioned, and other unfortunate companions, he faces the perils of an inhuman odyssey.

From crossing Brazil and the Amazon, where mafias exploit migrants, to sneaking into Ecuador and Colombia, each stage tests their resilience, morality, and human bonds. But it is the Darién Gap, between Colombia and Panama, that becomes their true hell:

  • Death, rape, theft, and summary executions,

  • Physical exhaustion, hunger, and despair,

  • A struggle for survival in a jungle where man is as much a predator as nature itself.

Yet, despite the violence of the journey, the story is not just about suffering. It is also marked by profound encounters, moments of solidarity, political and philosophical reflections, and even a fragile yet tenacious love between Pierre and Sharra.

Pierre and two of his companions eventually reach the U.S., only to be detained upon arrival. While Frank and Kenneth are deported, Pierre is granted temporary admission after seven months—though his asylum case remains unresolved. Between the collapse of his engagement, repeated failures, and crushing despair, Pierre embodies self-denial, empathy, and an extraordinary example of adaptability and curiosity.

Through this intense and well-researched novel, the reader is plunged into one of the most perilous journeys of our time—where hope constantly flirts with tragedy.
