I checked into the ageing Briarwood Hotel to investigate an urban legend: a missing room the staff swore was never built.

The rooms go from 5 straight to 7. There’s no Room 6. At least, that’s what they want you to believe.

But at night, I heard muffled voices through the wall where Room 6 should have been — whispers, crying, laughter. When I tried to find out the truth, I discovered something the hotel has spent decades trying to erase.
