Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Candid where we have real talks with real people.
In this episode we discussed the announcement made by the Prime Minister The Hon. Philip Davis regarding an increase in minimum wage. The minimum wage currently stands at $210 per week and the government wants to raise that to $260 per week. The last minimum wage increase in the country happened in 2015.
Amidst high gas prices and extreme inflation as a result of the Ukrainian and Russian war as well as the coronavirus pandemic many Bahamians have been suffering. Davis' answer was an increase in pay, although it is still not a livable wage it is a start he says. To date there has been no long term comprehensive plan presented to the public to help continuously offset the gap between wages and the cost of living. Increasing wages every few years is not enough.
Suggestion:
The government can hire researchers to study the average influx of inflation yearly and then the government should raise wage by the average percentage. For instance, if the cost of living increases by 2% every year, raise the minimum wage by 2 % the following year so that the wages can stay fairly close to the cost of living. But that's just a thought...let us know your thoughts.
We hope you enjoyed this episode. Thank you for tuning into another episode of Candid.
Keep it real Bahamas!
