In this episode, I examine in more detail the nicknames, "job duties," and potential religious connections of the mysterious Bertolais.

What was he called by his peers? What was his position with King Leodagan before he was exiled for murder?

And just exactly what is a seneschal?

In this week's episode, "Bertolais: Spymaster, Queenmaker, and… Terrorist?" I examine the second contender for the position of arch-Arthurian-villain: the slippery old knight, Bertolais.

Who was he? What do the – EIGHT! – different variations of his name mean? Why was he exiled?

What did he mean to the False Guinevere? How and where did they meet?

And did the murder he committed occur before – or after – his mysterious reunion with Guinevere’s shady sister?

  • The Ogre and the False Guinevere: Brutal Father, Bastard Daughter
    Dec 16 2025

    Send us a text

In this week's episode, I discuss the father of the False Guinevere, Queen Guinevere’s treacherous, illegitimate half-sister.

Though they had different mothers, the two Guineveres were fathered by the same man. Theirs was a bitter rivalry that nearly cost them both their lives, rent the kingdom in two, and, so say the Welsh bards, caused the dreadful strife at Camlan, in which both Arthur and his successor, Modred, perished.

Stay tuned for the fights, the wives, and the strife, in this week's Camelot Chat!

    Send us a text

In this week's episode, "Guinevere: Four Fathers for a Phantom Queen", I examine the fathers of the multiple queens of Arthur, specifically that of the most famous of them all: Queen Guinevere. Her father was rumored to be an ogre, a giant, and an otherworldly wraith straight out of song and rhyme.

But does a mortal man lurk behind these shadowy vapors?

The first episode is "Of Camilla and Vortigern: The Shieldmaid and the Overlord."

King Arthur was rumored to have as many as four different queens. The queen's fathers were variously viewed as ogres or giants, landing them in the realm of myth.

But do they really belong there?
