Jacob and his clan had left the land of promise and were now settled in Egypt. God foretold that the family would remain in Egypt for 400 years. Will the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob ever redeem the promised land? Jacob’s blessing upon his sons and grandsons shows his unwavering faith in God’s promises. Jacob learned to trust God, and today we are encouraged to do likewise.

Life is a journey. The start is physical birth, but the true beginning is regeneration (spiritual rebirth); and the goal is Christlikeness and eternal life with your Savior.

Genesis 46 shows God bringing His people back together, restoring what sin and brokenness had fractured. He restores faith, reunites family, and reassures the future. This points to Jesus, who reunites us with God, restores our faith and gives us hope for eternity.

Epic tales of redemption and revenge, like the Count of Monte Cristo, Shawshank Redemption (a Stephen King short story) and of course The Princess Bride resonates with us, because God hardwired humanity towards redemptive narratives. The Bible is a meta narrative of God’s redemption and restoration of humanity after the fall in Eden. Here, we see a picture of that redemptive plan in the account of Joseph and his brothers.

Genesis 44 shows us a clear picture of God’s transformative power in the lives of Joseph’s brothers - especially Judah. As we examine our hearts, we quickly see how selfishness, pride, and other sin is far too prevalent, which ultimately leave us empty and unfulfilled. As we grow as followers of Jesus, our hearts are transformed to become more like His, and it is this transformation that provides true fulfillment.

Grace relates to unmerited favor (you get something good that you don’t deserve). The greatest expression of God’s grace is the gospel, the good news that salvation is available through faith in Christ. God graciously offers forgiveness, restoration, spiritual life and Himself through faith in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and resurrection.

This chapter reveals a picture of this process of renewal as Joseph is a picture of the savior and his brothers are a picture of humanity, sinners in need of restoration. Let’s discover together and appreciate our restoration even more…

Genesis 42 demonstrates that through confrontation, conviction, and correction God restores what is broken by sin by bringing us to repentance, reconciling us to Himself, and rebuilding our relationship with others.

God’s plans triumph, despite difficult circumstances. However, when things don’t go our way, we tend to become anxious and/or impatient, whereas, trusting in God’s timing and sovereignty over circumstances demonstrates humility, wisdom, maturity, and faith. God blesses these qualities in our lives.
