• Episode 4 - Charles Symmes - Ft. Lynne Rodier

    Lynne's second appearance on the podcast is focused on the life of Charles Symmes, the owner of the Symmes Inn, which is now a local museum.

    Charles Symmes was a nephew of Philemon Wright Sr (episode 1). He came to Canada in 1819 to work as a bookkeeper for his uncle. In 1831, he built what is now the famous Symmes Inn on the river bank and went into business with several other business men in the area. Over the years, the waterfront was developed with a huge wharf and Symmes went into a partnership building a steam boat named Lady Colborne. He was also the Mayor of Aylmer, Quebec from 1855 to 1858 and again from 1860 to 1862.

  • Episode 3 - Alonzo Wright - Ft. Linda Sparks

    For this episode, Linda Sparks joins host Jacob Lavigne to talk about the life and career of Alonzo Wright, and how he came to be known as the King of Gatineau. 

    Alonzo Wright was the son of Tiberius Wright and the grand-son of Philemon Wright Sr (Episode 1). Alonzo Wright was one of the executor of Tiberius Wright's large estate and did not trust his uncle Ruggles Wright, who he ended up suing. From 1867 to 1891, he inherited land and became a well known Member of Parliament. Alonzo also loved to entertained in his large home called "Le Chateau." It was through regular banquets that he became largely regarded as the "King of Gatineau."

  • Episode 2 - Nicholas Sparks - Ft. Lynne Rodier

    Lynne Rodier is an historian in the Outaouais region.

    For this first appearance on the podcast (see episode 4), Lynne tells us about the life and career of Nicholas Sparks, the owner of the land known as Bytown, which later came to be known as Ottawa.

    Nicholas Sparks arrived in the Outaouais region from Ireland in 1816. He worked for P. Wright and Sons and married Philemon Wright Jr widow Sarah Olmstead after Philemon Wright Jr tragic death from a horse carriage accident. The marriage cemented Sparks leadership in the lumber trade on both sides of the river, while also owing most of the land then known as Bytown.

    Rick Henderson is the fourth great grandson of Philemon Wright, he is also the author of the book Walking in the footsteps of Philemon Wright

    In this first episode, Rick explores the story of his ancestor from his arrival in the Outaouais in 1800, to his impact on the local timber trade.

    Philemon Wright is one of the first pioneers and first permanent settlers in Canada's National Capital. Although we know Wright as a major figures in the local forestry industry, when he arrived he only had Farming in mind. His original and failed goal was to build a prosperous agricultural community in Canada.

    This episode is an introduction to Our Ancestors and How They Shape The Land. It focuses on the conception, production and presentation of the podcast, as well as the collaboration between CHIP 101.9 and Regional Association of West Quebecers (RAWQ). In this episode, we hear from some key individuals that helped make the podcast possible.

    David Gillespie, a member of both organizations' Board of Directors, he is the Treasurer of RAWQ and Vice-President of CHIP 101.9. David was instrumental part of getting the project off ground and getting organizations working together.

    Second is Linda Sparks. Linda was the key to telling the stories, she widely regarded as the podcasts founder and content writer.

    Lastly Jacob Lavigne, the podcast's host and producer. He worked closely with Linda Sparks every step of the way to ensure that the collective vision of the two organizations became to be the end result.

His art can be found for sale at the Marche Bristol Market at the beach by the pier in Norway Bay Quebec Saturdays from 11 to 3 during the summer months.  Barry likes to highlight imperfections such as knots, bark inclusions and cracks in each piece. Barry shapes each piece to best show off mother nature's artwork.
