Most are mundane. Some are honored. A few are never spoken of.When the narrator opens their box, they find a single word burned into the wood: Shepherd.No one will explain what it means. Whispers replace answers. Fear replaces pride.Searching for the truth leads them to a reclusive old man, the last person to bear the same title. He reveals the reality Doorvale hides from itself: some of the dead do not leave. They become hollow husks, bodies without souls that linger behind the veil, threatening to tear it open. The Shepherd’s duty is to find these remains and end them through ritual, guiding what’s left safely beyond.Horrified, the narrator tries to escape the town. The attempt ends in a violent, supernatural incident that proves the truth—the role is binding. Distance means nothing. Doorvale has claimed them.When the old Shepherd dies, the burden transfers completely. Alone, feared, and unseen, the narrator accepts the role they never wanted. As night falls and shadows begin to move, they take their place—not as a citizen anymore, but as the town’s last defense against what refuses to stay dead.The story closes on a grim understanding: Doorvale survives not because it is safe—but because someone is always chosen to stand between it and the darkness.

Defiance does not break the cycle—it accelerates it. In the end, the stories deliver a single, grim truth: destiny cannot be outrun.
