  • Federal Government Caps International Student Intake at 270,000 for 2025
    Sep 5 2024

International students and university staff are raising concerns about the federal government’s decision to cap the number of international students at 270,000 starting next year, fearing it may jeopardize the future of Australia’s tertiary education system.

The cap, which will apply to the 2025 academic year, represents a reduction of 53,000 students compared to last year. The government claims the measure is necessary to create a “better and fairer” system for international education in Australia. However, students and university staff argue that this decision could have far-reaching consequences, including job losses and damage to Australia’s global reputation as a welcoming education destination.

An international student share his perserctives with the Wire’s Vanessa Gatica.

  • New Study Reveals Lasting Health Impacts of Traumatic Brain Injury
    Aug 28 2024

A recent study found that even mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can lead to long-term brain changes in healthy middle-aged adults.

The research, part of the PREVENT Dementia study, showed that those with a history of mild TBI had detectable brain changes, including cerebral microbleeds, poorer sleep quality, and increased depressive symptoms.

While cognitive function wasn’t significantly affected, these changes could be early signs of potential neurodegenerative conditions, highlighting the importance of early intervention and preventive strategies.

Lead researcher Dr. Audrey Low speaks with The Wire’s Vanessa Gatica and emphasize the importance of recognizing TBI as a modifiable risk factor for dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.

They call for increased awareness and targeted interventions to mitigate the long-term impacts of even mild TBIs in the broader population.
