  • Without Fear or Favour: Challenges of reporting on China

    Without Fear or Favour was held on 30 May 2022 at the Judith Neilson Institute. The session covered the intricacies of Australian journalists covering affairs in China. 

    A collaboration between Media Diversity Australia and the NEMBC presented a panel of experts moderated by award-winning journalist Stan Grant (ABC). The panel included Mandi Wicks (SBS), Jennifer Hsu (Lowy Institute), Songfa Liu (ICMS Radio) and Echo Hui (ABC). Founder of Media Diversity Australia Isabel Lo also gave opening remarks.   

    CEO of Media Diversity Australia, Mariam Veiszadeh opened and closed the night, and CEO of the National Foundation for Australia China Relations, Peter Cai, spoke at the event as well.

    Jo Pratt is the Executive Officer and Station Manager of 4EB in Brisbane. Her background was originally in performing arts and has been the Station Manager for 4 years. 

    Jo discusses the way the pandemic brought to light the need to alter old models and to innovate and create change. She also discussed how the pandemic gave her staff perspective and space to survey and reflect on their reach. Quality control and training in broadcasting was also discussed.
