When the body of a young man is found stuffed into the tomb of a medieval knight, Parish Constable Daniel Haze is tasked with investigating his first solo murder case. Suspicion instantly falls on the only stranger to arrive in the village of Birch Hill just before the crime took place, but the American captain proves to be an unexpected asset. A former soldier and a skilled surgeon, Jason Redmond is not only willing to assist Haze with the investigation but will risk his own safety to apprehend the killer.

With no suspects, no motive, and few leads to follow, Redmond and Haze must solve the crime before one of them becomes the murderer’s next victim.

Murder in the Crypt is the exciting first installment of this Victorian murder mystery series set in a quaint British village.

Unerwartet spannend

I was pleasantly surprised about the good language used and the interaction of the leading characters with one another. I liked all of this and the narrator was excellent, thank you! There were a few minor flaws, though, that have kept me from given it a five star rating. One example: in a ducal household in the 19th century, a housemaid would have never gone unaccompanied into her master’s bedchamber in order to wake him up, and what’s more, by touching him. All the same, thank you very much indeed for this free audiobook!

An interesting and pleasant murder mystery, thank you!

This was a pretty good mystery. I thought I had it figured out, but I was actually somewhat surprised by the resolution. There were some disturbing details about the story that might upset some readers (spoilers in review on Story Graph), but thankfully they aren't described in detail on the page. The characters were somewhat interesting, but it felt very surface. I hope they develop more depth in their relationships in future books.

The narration was ok, but it was sometimes hard to keep the characters straight because the narrator didn't really try to change the voices and her American accent was off. She also talked very slowly. I actually listened at 1.5 speed with ease, which I never do.

Solid start to the series

Nice story and well written. Immediately interesting and easy to immerse yourself in. Only problem was that the narrator can’t do an American accent very well and it’s quite grating at first. You get used to it though so I would still recommend reading this.

Good
