When the body of a young woman is found near the ruins of a haunted abbey, everyone assumes she died of fright. A postmortem examination tells a different story. Not only was Elizabeth Barrett poisoned, but the lethal dose of cyanide must have been administered by someone close to her - someone she trusted, who may have known her secret.

As Captain Redmond and Constable Haze delve into the victim's seemingly ordinary life, they learn she wasn't the proper, biddable wife everyone believed her to be. With no clear motive for the murder and no obvious suspects, the trail soon grows cold. But the killer is closer than they imagined, waiting to strike with deadly force should they discover the truth.

This is the second installment of the exciting Redmond and Haze mysteries, perfect for fans of Arthur Conan Doyle, Anne Perry, and C.S. Harris.

Perhaps slightly too much focus on his lordship’s potential as a husband and, as mentioned above, really too predictable but otherwise a convenient listening.

Entertaining but quite predictable

Another solid mystery in the series. This was a bit more straightforward, so it did feel like it dragged a bit because it felt like they should be able to move things along faster, but the side quests added to the overall story. I am getting frustrated with the stalled love story of Lord Redmond and the vicar's daughter, so I hope there's progress in the next book on that front.

I honestly can't tell if I listen to these because I like them or because I just want to see if I solved the mystery. I feel like the main characters don't really interact enough to have a relationship, but we're regularly told they're close friends, despite maybe having only 2-3 chapters where they're actually together doing something. As usual Micah is a peach and the side characters carry the heart of the story.
