When midwife Sarah Brandt visits Little Italy to check up on a new mother who delivered her baby just the day before, she finds the young woman dead. The family insists that the death was from complications of childbirth. Sarah disagrees. So does the woman's own mother, an Irishwoman who spreads the story that the girl was murdered by her Italian in-laws, the Ruoccos - an accusation that inflames tensions between the two immigrant groups. The situation escalates when a second death in the tenements nearly leads to riots in the streets as political factions and organized crime take sides and square off over wild rumors and newspaper accusations. Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy realizes that he will need Sarah's help to unravel the secrets of these troubled families, bring a killer to justice, and restore order to the volatile community.

and no offense, but i am so very disappointed. that's the short version.
here's the long version:
being a longterm intense audiobook listener, i unexpectedly fell in love with victoria thompson's gaslight mystery series a few weeks ago and listened to callie beaulieu's super cool voice ALL the time.
then came book 9.
but what's that?
a likewise unexpected narrator change – unfortunately unexpectedly bad. the interpretation of characters is a poorly and overly pseudo-theatrical, non-fitting intonation that left me listening in a state of puzzled shock instead of enjoying voice and story as i did before. who made this decision? aren't there really good people out there? does anybody feel the same way?
i regard this as one of those rare acoustic nightmares that definately should not happen with good stories. and in my case, with only a few time to actually read, it will probably be the reason for not spending any more money on the following almost 20 books.
what an audioblocker!
concerning: narrator change after this episode (from 8 to 9)!
