Koschei the Deathless is to Russian folklore what devils or wicked witches are to Western European culture: a menacing, evil figure, the villain of countless stories that have been passed on through story and text for generations. But Koschei has never before been seen through the eyes of Catherynne Valente, whose modernized and transformed take on the legend brings the action to modern times, spanning many of the great developments of Russian history in the 20th century.

Deathless, however, is no dry, historical tome: it lights up like fire as the young Marya Morevna transforms from a clever child of the revolution, to Koschei’s beautiful bride, to his eventual undoing. Along the way, there are Stalinist house elves, magical quests, secrecy and bureaucracy, and games of lust and power. All told, Deathless is a collision of magical history and actual history, of revolution and mythology, of love and death, which will bring Russian myth back to life in a stunning new incarnation.

A really fine dark story, read extremely well. As in other fantasy works by Valente, the boundaries of the plot and world continue to expand all the way to the end.

A great grim tale retold in our time, boldly and without compromise

I loved the reader's voice, and the story was definetly weird, but I loved it. It was very unexpected, and much like a foreign fairytale. It's certainly not everyone's style, but loved how different the story was, how out of this world and yet so close to the heart.

Best book I've listened to in a long time!

A beautifully crafted and very clever tale, full of spectacular nods to Slavic fairy tales and folklore. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and the narrator’s delivery of the English passages is engaging and expressive.
What didn’t work for me was the pronunciation of the Russian names and terms. They’re a significant part of the book, and many are read with incorrect stress or mixed-up sounds, which became distracting. A bit of research on character names, street names, and key folklore figures would have elevated the performance.
That said, the story itself is exceptional, and I highly recommend it. If you’re new to Slavic folklore, a few elements may be confusing, but the narrative still shines.

Fresh take on slavic folklore
