A Sunday Times bestseller

How do you solve a murder... when everyone has the same motive? From global bestselling Anthony Horowitz, a brilliantly entertaining mystery in the Hawthorne and Horowitz series.

Richmond Upon Thames is one of the most desirable areas to live in London. And Riverview Close - a quiet, gated community – seems to offer its inhabitants the perfect life.

At least it does until Giles Kenworthy moves in with his wife and noisy children, his four gas-guzzling cars, his loud parties and his plans for a new swimming pool in his garden.

His neighbours all have a reason to hate him and are soon up in arms.

When Kenworthy is shot dead with a crossbow bolt through his neck, all of them come under suspicion and his murder opens the door to lies, deception and further death.

The police are baffled. Reluctantly, they call in former Detective Daniel Hawthorne. But even he is faced with a seemingly impossible puzzle.

How do you solve a murder when everyone has the same motive?

(CLOSE TO DEATH is one of) the five best murder mystery novels of all time
Easily the greatest of our crime writers
[Horowitz is] a master puppeteer
'A clever murder mystery…playful and twisty. Nobody does this crime fiction better than Anthony Horowitz
Spectacularly good fun, wickedly clever, with a pinch of the macabre, this is everything you could wish for from one of our top crime writers
I had a great time with Close to Death by our best living thriller writer, Anthony Horowitz. Set in a gated Richmond enclave, it combines endless narrative surprises with sharp observation of the professional classes
Turns the closed-circle mystery inside out
The master of the mystery
The king of the clever whodunnit
An excellent entertaining thriller

Loved the plot - there were a lot of characters, but I still could follow. I had several guesses about the ending during the story, all turned out to be wrong. That was really wonderful. Loved that the author spoke at the end and announced, there are another seven books coming. I would really enjoy if Rory Kinnear read them all to us. And I am looking forward to the new creative book titles, wordplay at its best

Loved it

This, the 5th book in the Hawthorne & Horowitz series, sees Horowitz just reporting on a crime from 5 years ago, instead of participating directly. He starts writing the story and his imagination embellishes it, so it’s strange for him when he finally meets the suspects. The murder itself is interesting (horrible man is apparently killed by his long-suffering neighbours). But all the different meta levels of what actually happened and what’s in his head was really well done.
I really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next instalment!
(For fans of British fiction and riddles).

Well constructed and fun!

I have heard many audiobooks of this author, and it always amazes me how he (and his team) can come up with these wonderful, never similar and surprising plots. They seem complicated but are very understandable even for a foreigner like me, and the narrator just makes everything perfect, even though I would read the books too, if there weren’t any audiobooks, but listening makes the characters so very alive. Thank you all and I am very happy to hear that the series will continue, the hardest part is the waiting for a new story and then I have to listen to it right away (sometimes even during the night) because the story just pulls me in 😊 and this one is over now too … maybe I will listen to it one more time … happy writing and happy listening to other (soon to be) anthony horowitz fans out there.

❤️ Thank you for another brilliant book 🙏

I have so looked forward to receiving this book and I was not disappointed. I never have listened to such an amazing story. I very much look forward to the next seven books of this series promised by Anthony Horowitz, as well as anything else he writes. Thank you for such a great book.
