Diana O’Toole is perfectly on track. Almost immediately, Diana’s dream vacation goes awry. Her luggage is lost, the Wi-Fi is nearly nonexistent, and the hotel they’d booked is shut down due to the pandemic. In fact, the whole island is now under quarantine, and she is stranded until the borders reopen. Completely isolated, she must venture beyond her comfort zone. Slowly, she carves out a connection with a local family when a teenager with a secret opens up to Diana, despite her father’s suspicion of outsiders.
In the Galápagos Islands, where Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was formed, Diana finds herself examining her relationships, her choices, and herself - and wondering if when she goes home, she too will have evolved into someone completely different.

Mixed feelings
Politics apart, the story is fascinating especially after a big turn that leaves you thinking "Wait! What? “. It was ingenious! But then the whole thing with parallel lives and psychics, it's a bit wako for my taste (and I felt like" Really??"). It is very interesting and worth listening, though, if you are not bothered by the weird approach to NDE.

Boring and pretentious
Definitely not one of Picoults best books. The story on Isabela Island is rather boring, the protagonist shallow and not interesting. In part 2 there is an unexpected twist that kept me reading on, but the end was really pathetic.
