Über diesen Titel
“Searing, heartrending . . . This stunning tale reminds us that the only way to keep living is to ask God for the impossible: love, forgiveness, and hope.”—Kate Bowler, New York Times bestselling author of Everything Happens for a Reason
Raised by an impoverished widow who earned room and board as a Bible teacher in 1950s Atlanta, Philip Yancey and his brother, Marshall, found ways to venture out beyond the confines of their eight-foot-wide trailer. But when Yancey was in college, he uncovered a shocking secret about his father’s death—a secret that began to illuminate the motivations that drove his mother to extreme, often hostile religious convictions and a belief that her sons had been ordained for a divine cause.
Searching for answers, Yancey dives into his family origins, taking us on an evocative journey from the backwoods of the Bible Belt to the bustling streets of Philadelphia; from trailer parks to church sanctuaries; from family oddballs to fire-and-brimstone preachers and childhood awakenings through nature, music, and literature. In time, the weight of religious and family pressure sent both sons on opposite paths—one toward healing from the impact of what he calls a “toxic faith,” the other into a self-destructive spiral.
Where the Light Fell is a gripping family narrative set against a turbulent time in post–World War II America, shaped by the collision of Southern fundamentalism with the mounting pressures of the civil rights movement and Sixties-era forces of social change. In piecing together his fragmented personal history and his search for redemption, Yancey gives testament to the enduring power of our hunger for truth and the possibility of faith rooted in grace instead of fear.
“I truly believe this is the one book I was put on earth to write,” says Yancey. “So many of the strands from my childhood—racial hostility, political division, culture wars—have resurfaced in modern form. Looking back points me forward.”

I was astonished about the tough upbringing of Philipp Yancey. This explains also why the Grace of God matters so much. From his tough background with family tragedies and an overly strict upbringing, very conservative church and college background…. Amazed and reminded how God appreciates the open, honest cry-out to Him.
Also I was shocked what negative effect a religious spirit can have within a family and how dangerous this is in combination with anger, hatred, bitterness and unforgiveness. When Philip asked his mam the Bible teacher about her anger and curse over his brother and she explained it away with „ it is more then anger, hurts stay“ and uses this as justification not being aware even after many years that we are called to forgive and admit our wrongs.
Is it fake or real? Insightful and shaking, how in a very religious, conservative environment, in children camps, church services, and later at theological scholl… repentance and a Christian life can be faked. While Jesus critiqued the Pharisees, the religious spirit must be a hindering block for many to find God.
This is a wonderful biography which shows why ultimately the Grace of God and Jesus blood subsedes. So good to know that God is in control and full of mercy. waiting for us to truly return to him.
There is one area i had expected more reflection, the field the enemy has in our lives. The teaching on Job helped Philipp Yancey in his development. But also curses and witchcraft within the church - someone praying against another person in the church over different views what is right and wrong - can have a terrible effect.
We need to be more aware of this and overcome. Jesus has come to destroy the works of the enemy, while the Lord loves the people. Too many Christians work against each other or are too busy and preoccupied, not being aware that the enemy tries to steal and destroy. If we don’t raise this more to attention, the enemy has a bigger area. But everything can be overcome with Jesus precious blood, his victory and our testimony and prayer. For Gods light shine onto the dark places.
Is it fake or real? Key question for the journey of life, deep and insightful
