My name is Gary Rendell. I'm an astronaut. When they asked me as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said, "astronaut, please!" I dreamed astronaut, I worked astronaut, I studied astronaut. I got lucky; when a probe exploring the Oort Cloud found a strange alien rock and an international team of scientists was put together to go and look at it, I made the draw.

I got even luckier. When disaster hit and our team was split up, scattered through the endless cold tunnels, I somehow survived.

Now I'm lost, and alone, and scared, and there's something horrible in here.

Adrian Tchaikowsky is an excellent narrator. The story is superbly written and told. three more words

great and unexpected

An astronaut is walking through an alien maze. He lost his way, his mind, his humanity. The story he tells (himself) is a tale how this all came about and after some time the listener realizes that this is a horror story! Small spoiler: no happy ending.

The author - who is also the narrator of this audiobook-novella - lures you to feel compassion for this lost soul. It all sounds so nice: little jokes, funny observations - until you realize that he has turned into a monster. Really a chilling story.

Good worldbuilding

Entertaining story, narrative is quite enjoyable and the fact that the author is the reader as well is a highlight.
However, and it's my personal opinion, Adrian Tchaikovsky's books are so rather rich in characters, so just by an audiobook it is sometimes difficult to get the full grasp of the history.

A total ride, quite enjoyable...
