In the tenth book of this hit fantasy series, a warrior will learn, no matter how many battles he wins, there's one inevitable truth: nobody's invincible.

Victor Sandoval—aka Lord Victor, Duke of Iron Mountain—has continued to expand his legendary status fighting for the kingdom of Gloria in the world of Rhun, where savage duels between champions are the ultimate deciders of fate. But his trials in the arena pale in comparison to what comes next.

As mightily as Victor employs his battle axe, he knows he has much to learn. Under the loving tutelage of the dragon woman Tes, his arcane power is climbing to new heights. But enemies are taking note. Even as the enigmatic veil walkers watch his duels with keen interest, whispers of betrayal stir among them—traitors willing to subvert Ruhn's ancient rule of law. Will Victor's strength and resolve be enough to withstand their schemes, or will his rising legend make him the target of forces that refuse to be bound by honor?

Meanwhile, an overconfident Victor faces off against an opponent who proves to be more than a match. Specifically, a warrior sent to end him once and for all, wielding a weapon beyond darkness known as the Curse of the Void. Its only purpose: eat Victor alive....

the start to the book was a bit slow. sometimes a bit too much talking and some descriptions of improving Victor's core could have been shorter. but overall still a good amount of action. some very epic things are happening and it was a lot of fun listening to this book.

good

The character development and brutality kept me entertained for most of the book. Interesting ideas and new worlds with new goals and promises keep coming

Intriguing as usual

I have to admit that I binge-read this series, so maybe I’m somewhat saturated by it at this point. Still, there are certain patterns that have become increasingly predictable — and honestly, very boring.

The biggest issue for me is the portrayal of women. Most female characters are introduced as strong, independent, and experienced individuals, only to later become insecure, overly emotional, and highly dependent on the MC. And it happens every single time. Really?

Character growth is another weak point. I still don’t fully understand what is supposed to make the MC so special. His big emotional heart? If that alone is enough, then by that standard almost every young man should qualify as extraordinary. He rarely reaches meaningful self-awareness through introspection or personal reflection. Instead, most of his growth and understanding are handed to him externally.

What frustrates me even more is how conflicts between him and the women around him are usually resolved. In the end, the “solution” almost always comes down to the MC explaining things rationally, as if his perspective is inherently the correct one and everyone else simply has to understand it. It makes many interactions feel one-sided and emotionally shallow.

Another thing that feels missing is the influence of his past. His previous experiences rarely seem to shape his current decisions or worldview in a meaningful way. The story simply flows from one world-conquering arc to the next without much emotional or psychological continuity.

At this point, I really hope the series introduces more depth and nuance — especially through meaningful male friendships or relationships that challenge the MC’s perspective and force him to realize that the world is not simply black and white.

It is getting boring
