One basic need all children have, educator Alfie Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including "time outs"), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful and largely unknown research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval. That's precisely the message children derive from common discipline techniques, even though it's not the message most parents intend to send.

More than just another book about discipline, Unconditional Parenting addresses the ways parents think about, feel about, and act with their children. It invites them to question their most basic assumptions about raising kids while offering a wealth of practical strategies for shifting from "doing to" to "working with" parenting - including how to replace praise with the unconditional support that children need to grow into healthy, caring, responsible people.

Was an interesting and informative book which had lots of data to back up what was being said.

Very interesting read, well researched and very well argued, this has opened my eyes to a new world of parenting. Thank you.

Perfekt für meine Kindererziehung zum Einbringen und Verstehen was in Kindern vorgeht falls sie mal anders reagieren als man selbst gerade nachvollziehen kann.

Comprehensive, logical, yet warm-hearted and positive. I wish this book and the concept of unconditional parenting was known to every parent on the planet <3
I just finished it but will restart listening to it immediately to take notes this time.
Extremely valuable and of great importance. It has shown me where I can improve and become better as a mum but also as a person. Thank you Alfie Kohn!

Best book on parenting I came across

Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten. Bitte versuche es in ein paar Minuten noch einmal.

Realizing the horrific truth: that the stick AND the carrot do more harm than good on the long term and messes with our kids psyche.
This book depicts the negative effect of rewards using ample examples, providing overwhelming and non-dogmatic sicentific evidence.
The author goes straight to the point, no BS. It is NOT people sharing their anectodes or teaching how to raise their own kids and then thinking it should apply to everyone.

I think it is a must-read for every parent, and the book isn't even boring and on top of that it's an easy read.

This book changed me
