Über diesen Titel

Ulysses is regarded by many as the single most important novel of the 20th century. It tells the story of one day in Dublin, June 16th 1904, largely through the eyes of Stephen Dedalus (Joyce's alter ego from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, an advertising salesman. Both begin a normal day, and both set off on a journey around the streets of Dublin, which eventually brings them into contact with one another.

While Bloom's passionate wife, Molly, conducts yet another illicit liasion (with her concert manager), Bloom finds himself getting into arguments with drunken nationalists and wild carousing with excitable medical students, before rescuing Stephen Dedalus from a brawl and returning with him to his own basement kitchen.

In the hands of Jim Norton and Marcella Riordan, experienced and stimulating Joycean readers, and carefully directed by Roger Marsh, Ulysses becomes accessible as never before. It is entertaining, immediate, funny, and rich in classical, philosophical, and musical allusion.

"As ambitious and rewarding an audio production as any that exists, an audio experience that truly deserves to be cherished....Readers of Ulysses have long been encouraged to read out loud the more difficult sections for added comprehension and enjoyment of the language. Now, thanks to Naxos, the entire book is available in a performance to savor. It is safe to say that anyone wanting to experience the preeminent work of modern fiction has in this package the perfect audio companion." (AudioFile)

This is by far the best Ulysses audio book I have seen. The listener feels that it is read with love and enthusiasm. Absolutely wonderful.

Read with love and enthusiasm

German below.

Norton's effort is outstanding, this is a joy to listen to.
Unfortunately, I also bought an e-book on Kindle to take advantage of the Whispersync function. That did not work. Having then understood that you cannot just add any two Whispersync articles with one another, it was ultimately impossible to find the e-book corresponding with this Audiobook.

The Whispersync function ought therefore not be considered when deciding for this audio, the sheer quality of Norton's work, however, should.

Very good, but Whispersync.... Sehr gut, aber ...

"Ulysses" has a repuation for being a difficult - and while that repuation is not quite undeserved, it is very hard to see where it is coming from when listening to this audio book.

Jim Norton reads the novel with such obvious enthusiasm and does such a wonderful job at making Joyce's Dublin come alive and giving all of his characters a unique voice that he carries the listeners along with him, making them forget that all of this is supposed to be difficult and turning it into several hours of pure enjoyment.

Strongly recommended!

Very Enjoyable

Joyce’s Ulysses is a truly demanding and lengthy classic. I admit to having failed reading the book through - despite several attempts. But Jim Norton’s amazing versatility and depth of characterization kept me listening “from cover to cover”. The story is set in Dublin, the characters are Irish (with divers backgrounds) -to listen to their voices in their own accents and “language melody” provides a deep, almost corporeal understanding. Some passages made me a bit impatient though, but that’s rather because of the author’s unrelenting verbal playfulness. Also a great thanks to Marcella Riordan’s sensuous Molly

Demanding classic brought to life

The whispers are very quiet and the shouting extremely loud. Because this is James Joyce there is a lot of unpredictable switching between whispers and shouts. Also because this is James Joyce the shouts are often about piss or whatever. So trying to listen to this in a public setting is a nightmare. You turn the volume up to hear whispers then suddenly - piss themed shouting blows your headphones up and everyone is looking at you.
This is the only audio book I have this issue with.
Let me clamp audio amazon please.
Otherwise I love the book, love the reader too.

Volume range way too big

this is not only hard to understand for non native English speaker but also the narrator switches from super low reading tone to jelling in an Instant.. enthusiasm when reading is good but there is a limit. If the listener needs to keep the hand on the volume control you went too far.

Too loud or too quiet - terrible audio
