How much of our daily caloric intake comes from ingesting substances that, technically speaking, do not meet traditional definitions of “food”? Chances are, if you’re eating something that came wrapped in plastic and contains a funky ingredient you don’t have in your kitchen, it's most likely—almost definitely—ultra-processed food, or UPF. More than the principal obstacle to “eating right,” UPF has been linked to metabolic disease, depression, inflammation, anxiety, and cancer, while the production, distribution, and disposal of UPF and related products globally is known to cause devastating environmental damage. At the same time, UPF represents the dominant, nigh-unavoidable food culture for millions upon millions of eaters.

Medical doctor and broadcaster Chris van Tulleken has spent his career trying to reframe the conversation around eating right, balancing the hard (and sometimes shocking) facts about what we're putting into our bodies with empathy for the natural desire to keep eating what we like, have time for, and can afford. As he argues in this book, we are all participants in an experiment we didn't consent to, one to determine how to get us to buy as much ultra-processed food as possible. Excellent and sobering

A scathing and unblinking assessment of the food industry. This book seriously adjusted the way I see food. I'm already vegan and thought I understood this area but this fresh take on how capitalism is core to the terrible quality food we're all being fed is sobrring, and the emphasis on food vs edible substances is extremely prescient. I recommend this to anyone who cares about what they eat, and how the world is affected by the capitalistic nature of the food industry.

Key information for a healthier humanity

Dr. Chris van Tulleken gives us key-information about Ultra-Processed-Foods (UPF) and the money-driven food industry.
- The food industry’s intention is to extract money from us, not to nourish us out of love, which food should be.
- The tobacco industry partly IS the food industry, in the 1980’s Phillip Morris and R.J. Reynolds bought Kraft, General foods and NABISCO.
- UPF makes us overconsume and addicted, which makes us obese, sick and leads to death.
- They have billions of dollars and PhD’s to design their products, we have no chance to resist.
- It’s not you, it’s the food.
- poverty is the underlying problem of overconsumption of cheap and addictive UPF.
- Nestle bought several pharmaceutical companies: they make us sick with their food and produce the medicine that’s supposed to “heal” the symptoms.
- The food industry is not to blame, we need regulation with warnings on the package. Corrupt politicians and health experts are to blame.
