About the author

Joy Ellis is not your ordinary newcomer to crime fiction. She started work in the 1960s as an apprentice florist in Covent Garden before opening her own flower shop in Lincolnshire. Later in life, she began to consider a career change towards crime writing and attended a workshop in Greece led by Sue Townsend, author of Adrian Mole. Ellis has now left the flowers behind and dedicates her life to writing gritty crime thrillers set in the Fens, where she lives with her police officer partner.

About the narrator

Richard Armitage is a British actor known for his vast array of film, television and theatre work, including The Hobbit, Spooks and The Crucible. His trademark baritone voice has earned him recognition, too, through his performance on many notable audiobooks as well as in TV and radio show narration.

His audiobook credits include The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde featured in The Monster Collection, David Copperfield, and Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber, and this experience shines through in Armitage's gripping performance of Their Lost Daughters.

Too close to the Nikki Galena Series

I think this story is just perfect!
There are many unexpectable twists and till the end you had no idea who the responsible people are!
The narrator is easy to understand even as a german and you can distinguish the different characters easy through the different types of speaking.

A perfect crime story

Die Erzählerstimme ist erstmal gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber nach 30 Minuten habe ich mir keine bessere vorstellen können. Tolle Dialektnachahmung.
Die Geschichte ist spannend, etwas verstörend und führt streckenweise an der Nase herum. Kauf nicht bereut.

Gute Spannung bis zum Schluss, angenehm in der Länge und dadurch kurzweilig. R. Armitage als Sprecher wie immer perfekt, vielseitig schlüpft er in alle Rollen.

I would have liked it much more without tortured children; it's actually well written and looks like a good crime series. But I really would have preferred a different plot.

The wonderful, talented Richard Armitage brings this sound kriminalistic story to life.
His ability to slip effortlessly into different accents leave me flabbergasted. What a treat. Joy Ellis' story has until the end held my full attention. Could not recommend this book more highly.

Unbelievable good

Großartiger, sehr spannender Krimi von Joy Ellis. Markerschütternde Handlung, die kurz vor dem Ende doch noch gewendet wird. 12 grausam ermordete Mädchen und illegale Partyabende an unterschiedlichen Orten, bei denen sich Männer an alkoholisierten Jugendlichen vergreifen, sind die Hauptaspekte der Handlung. Allerdings hat die Autorin noch viele weitere Ideen, die diesen Krimi einfach mitreißend machen.
Das Team um DI Jackman und seiner schlagkräftigen Marie in Saltern-le-Fen bekommt Verstärkung, so z.B. durch die sehr jung aussehende DC Rosie McElderry, die als undercover Polizistin zu zwei dieser Partyabende mit einem Kollegen eingeschleust wird. Richard Armitage spricht Jackman und Evans richtig gut, gegen Ende bekommt auch Ruth Crooke mehr Redeanteile mit signifikantem Dialekt. Einen der einheimischen Verdächtigen liest er so langsam mit Akzent, dass man fast einschläft, das passt aber auch hervorragend zum Inhalt. Dem Pathologen Rory Wilkinson gibt Richard Armitage schon hier seinen typischen Akzent, das ist umwerfend komisch im düsteren Thriller. Rory Wilkinson ist außerdem mit guten Helfern zur Stelle, so kann er Ted Watchman mit extrem teuren Suchgeräten und den Professor Henry O`Byrne, einen Psychologen, ins Spiel bringen. Ihn liest Richard Armitage mit einem lokalen Akzent, sehr authentisch!
Inhaltlich ein ganz großer Thriller mit dem besten aller Sprecher. Big thanks to author and performer!

The story is very catching right from the first moment. I listened to this one not knowing it was the second book in a series, but had no trouble connection with the characters.
Richard Armitage reads so well - I could listen literally for hours :)
