Inhaltsangabe

For almost a decade, Rachel Caine has turned her back on home, kept distant by family disputes and her work monitoring wolves on an Idaho reservation. But now, summoned by the eccentric earl of Annerdale and his controversial scheme to reintroduce the grey wolf to the English countryside, she is back in the peat and wet light of the Lake District.

The earl's project harks back to an ancient idyll of untamed British wilderness - though Rachel must contend with modern-day concessions to health and safety, public outrage, and political gain - and the return of the grey after hundreds of years coincides with her own regeneration: impending motherhood and reconciliation with her estranged family.

The Wolf Border investigates the fundamental nature of wilderness and wildness, both animal and human. It seeks to understand the most obsessive aspects of humanity: sex, love, and conflict; the desire to find answers to the question of our existence; those complex systems that govern the most superior creature on Earth.

Kritikerstimmen

"What an achievement - so vivid, so visceral, so vital. I can see the wolves and the characters in the landscape like a movie in my head. Every time I picked it up, I struggled to put it down again. It’s a beautiful construction." (Val McDermid)

Of Wolves and Men

Sarah Hall wrote a really outstanding novel, rich and honest in language, merciless in her account of human interaction and not shy of raising controversial issues. It is the best book, I read in a long time.

It is not only a story about the need and difficulties to provide space for wilderness and wildlife on our crowded little planet, it is a story about the essence of life. It is about our struggle to balance the selfish need of giving meaning to our life and the way, how we care for people close to us.

Sarah Hall demonstrates incredible insight and knowledge, when she talks about wildlife preservation and human interference. There is no obfuscating romanticism here, her description is precise and harsh in some of the details. Regardless of that, she reveals the beauty of the Cumbrian countryside in such a sensual way that it appears to be nearly touchable, it draws the reader into its magic.

The plot is unusual and intriguing, but not the main reason, why this book is a real page turner. Rachel Caine, a zoologist working on a wolf preservation program in Idaho, gets the surprising offer to work for the eccentric and rich Earl of Annerdale to setup a wildlife sanctuary for wolves in the Lake District of England, close to the place, she grew up. The return to her home country forces her to confront her past, her ambiguous and difficult relationship with her mother and half-brother, but even more important for her, she has to review her own life and face some of her innermost secrets and fears. She has to rethink her solitary life and nearly autistic denial of close contact, her reluctance to accept and give love.

This is not a book of false tenderness and teary eyed romance, it is a very truthful book and you will recognize yourself in many of its facets.
