A faded country house in the middle of nowhere. The guests are snowed in.

The murders begin.

Withering and waspish, Ursula Smart (not her real name) gate-crashes her mother's book club at an isolated country house for a long weekend retreat. Much to Mother's chagrin. Joining them are Mother's best friend, Mirabelle, Aunts Charlotte and Less, and Bridget with her dog, Mr. Bojangles. It doesn't matter that they've read Gone Girl three times this year already, this retreat is their chance to escape bustling suburbia. But someone has other ideas.

A body is found in the grounds.

Is a lone killer hunting them? Or has one of their own group embarked on a killing spree?

What they need is to stop sniping at each other long enough to solve the mystery before the killer strikes again.

What they need is a guide to survive.

The idea, the setting and the writing style are great. The book drew me in quick and didn't let go, but in the end I left unsatisfied. The book club members are so deeply unpleasant and unsympathetic that I started to get excited about the fact that I'm reading a who-done-it so hopefully these snobby, selfish and cruel ladies would receive some poetic justice. By the half way point I started to hope for a "and then there were none" scenario... That the least likeable people just walked out was anticlimactic as hell

Sadly the snobs don't learn and leave as awful as they arrived so it's hard to root for them

The first chapters were terrific to listen to, an entertaining whodunnit, very humorous dialogs and pointy remarks.
Unfortunately the second part is less amusing but seems rather lengthily.
But Ester Wane bringing each character to life in very individual ways was still worth listening.

Great Narrator, story strangely becoming progressively listless

Merkwürdige Charaktere und trotzdem hat mich die Art der Geschichte so in den Bann gezogen, dass ich auf jeden Fall die anderen beiden Stories hören werde. Gern mehr davon. Die Sprecherin ist klasse

Packend

It takes absolutely ages to get going and the very thin plot is stretched to the utmost by highly irritating and very stupid dialogues that also keep repeating themselves. That, with the collection of old battle axes plus one hysterical daughter (Smart Women?), does not make for entertaining hearing. The plot could have been reduced to a third and not lost out, less is really very often more. The reader does her best to make the story more exiting, but there's only so much she can do. Don't think I'll go for this author again.

Utterly daft story

I really wanted to like this book. The title sounded so good! But this toxic relationship between a mother and daughter and the hysterical reading made it impossible, though.

Toxic and hysterical
