Welcome to The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar. I'm Sam Quinn, the werewolf book nerd in charge. I run my business by one simple rule: Everyone needs a good book and a stiff drink, be they vampire, wicche, demon, or fae. No wolves, though. Ever.

I serve the supernatural community of San Francisco. We've been having some problems lately. Okay, I'm the one with the problems. The broken body of a female werewolf washed up on my doorstep. What makes sweat pool at the base of my spine, though, is realizing the scars she bears are identical to the ones I conceal. After hiding for years, I've been found.

A protection I've been relying on is gone. While my wolf traits are strengthening steadily, the loss also left my mind vulnerable to attack. Someone is ensnaring me in horrifying visions intended to kill. Clive, the sexy vampire Master of the City, has figured out how to pull me out, designating himself my personal bodyguard. He's grumpy about it, but that kiss is telling a different story. A change is taking place. It has to.

I'm a survivor. I'll fight fang and claw to protect myself and the ones I love. And let's face it - they have it coming.

Finally a heroine who is strong although she has a terrible past. Be warned, in this first book of the series she has to overcome her experiences with rape, torture and abuse but she does so seriously and with lots of grit. In the end she becomes a real bad@ss. The relationship with her vampire lover is an adult one, not a teenage-fantasy. There are likable side characters as well. The narration is also enjoyable. All in all well worth a credit.

I am listening to A LOT of audio books each year. This one has been fun and even though it contains mature topics it is rather on the light-entertainment side and doesn't go in too deep.
It has many changes in scenes as if the author only writes out the highlights. Sometimes when listening while doing a task, my mind would wander off for a few seconds and I would have to go back because the scene had already changed again 😅

Who is looking for a crescent city type of book, is definitely in the wrong place. If you're looking for a light but fun book with character development that gets better book by book, building friendships, relationships and genuinely just something that keeps you interested without dying of suspense (nor of disgust by too much cruelty in scenes) you're in the right place with Sam 😊

I recommend this book to everyone who likes fantasy with some romance and happy ends without being like „he’s my soulmate and there is nothing else that matters in my life“. Sam Quinn goes through a lot of growth throughout the series and it is just a good feel-good book with some action and tension but never huge drama and misunderstandings. I also like the side characters, how even if you disagree with what they say or do you can still understand where they’re coming from.

Finally, the book is a good example of how healthy relationships can look like, without sexist bullshit.

I liked the story, the characters, especially Sam, and the speaker. It laid the ground for more interesting development in the future without being unresolved.
