Interessante Charaktere, abstruses Worldbuilding

My German Review: Die große Stärke des Romans sind die symphatischen Charaktere und das Südstaaten-Setting und auch die Verwendung von primär europäischen Einwanderermythen ist eine nette Abwechslung - allerdings sind das Worldbuilding und der Handlungsablauf schlicht und ergreifend unrealistisch (Ich weiß, es ist ein Fantasy-Roman).
Nicht nur, dass praktisch jeder in Harpers Landing "etwas Besonderes" ist (kein Spoiler, das kriegt man bereits nach zwei Kapiteln mit), das ganze wird so Matter-of-Fact eingeführt, dass man sich anfangs fragen muss ob dies eine alternative Realität a'la True Blood sein soll (ist es offenbar nicht).
Das größte Manko ist die unglaublich langsam fortschreitende Ermittlung - und zwar nicht im Sinne von "seitenweise lang passiert nichts", sondern der Umstand, dass die Gemeinschaft Monate braucht um zu dem Schluss zu kommen, was die Morde begeht und dann wie man die Gefahr unschädlich macht. Zwischendurch sterben gefühlt jeden Tag Menschen (vor allem Jugendliche) - aber die Gemeinschaft nimmt sich einfach Zeit und tut nichts (Recherche muss ja sein).

Hier noch ein Hinweis zum 2. Roman "Madness of Trees". Hier ist es sogar noch schlimmer: die Gemeinschaft weiß im Grunde genommen sofort, wer die Morde begeht und es vergehen trotzem ebenfalls Monate und multiple Massaker, bis die Gefahr gebannt wird.

Auch technisch hat der 2. Roman ein Problem, hier wurden Wiederholungen und einmal sogar eine Pause des Sprechers, der sich versprochen hat, dringelassen.

Werde einen möglichen 3. Roman (leider) nicht lesen/hören.

My English Review: Interesting characters - ridiculous worldbuilding. The novel's great strengths are the likeable characters and the southern setting, and the use of primarily European immigrant myths is a nice change - but the worldbuilding and plot are simply unrealistic (and I know it is a fantasy novel).
Not only is practically everyone in Harpers Landing "something special" (no spoiler, you get that after just two chapters), the whole thing is introduced in such a matter-of-fact way that you initially have to ask yourself whether this is an alternative reality a'la True Blood (apparently it isn't).
The biggest drawback is that the investigation progresses incredibly slowly - and not in the sense of "nothing happens for pages and pages", but the fact that it takes the community months to come to the conclusion of what is causing the murders and then how to neutralize the danger. It feels like people die every day (especially young people) - but the community just takes its time and doesn't do anything (because research is necessary).

Here's a note about the second novel "Madness of Trees". Here it is even worse: the community basically knows immediately who is committing the murders and months and multiple massacres still pass before the danger is averted.

The second novel also has a technical problem: repetitions and once even a pause by the speaker, who misspelled something, were left in.

I (unfortunately) will not read/listen to a possible third novel.
