The result is a “scathing and revelatory” (The New Yorker) White House memoir that is the most comprehensive and substantial account of the Trump Administration, and one of the few to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the President, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a President for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation. “I am hard-pressed to identify any significant Trump decision during my tenure that wasn’t driven by reelection calculations,” he writes. In fact, he argues that the House committed impeachment malpractice by keeping its prosecution focused narrowly on Ukraine when Trump’s Ukraine-like transgressions existed across the full range of his foreign policy—and Bolton documents exactly what those were, and attempts by him and others in the Administration to raise alarms about them.

He shows a President addicted to chaos, who embraced our enemies and spurned our friends, and was deeply suspicious of his own government. In Bolton’s telling, all this helped put Trump on the bizarre road to impeachment. “The differences between this presidency and previous ones I had served were stunning,” writes Bolton, who worked for Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43. He discovered a President who thought foreign policy is like closing a real estate deal—about personal relationships, made-for-TV showmanship, and advancing his own interests. As a result, the US lost an opportunity to confront its deepening threats, and in cases like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea ended up in a more vulnerable place.

Bolton’s “first tell-all memoir by such a high-ranking official” (The New York Times) starts with his long march to the West Wing as Trump and others woo him for the National Security job. The minute he lands, he has to deal with Syria’s chemical attack on the city of Douma, and the crises after that never stop. As he writes in the opening pages, “If you don’t like turmoil, uncertainty, and risk—all the while being constantly overwhelmed with information, decisions to be made, and sheer amount of work—and enlivened by international and domestic personality and ego conflicts beyond description, try something else.”

The turmoil, conflicts, and egos are all there—from the upheaval in Venezuela, to the erratic and manipulative moves of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, to the showdowns at the G7 summits, the calculated warmongering by Iran, the crazy plan to bring the Taliban to Camp David, and the placating of an authoritarian China that ultimately exposed the world to its lethal lies. But this seasoned public servant also has a great eye for the Washington inside game, and his story is full of wit and wry humor about how he saw it played. Jemand der Trump darstellt wie er wirklich ist, ohne Filter, ohne Beschönigungen, ohne Drama oder „second thoughts. Man merkt Bolton seine Erfahrung in Regierungen an, und dass er das Beste für sein Land möchte. Guter Mann, gutes Buch.

Interessante Einblicke in das Mit- und Gegeneinander innerhalb der Trump-Administration, natürlich mit klarem Schwerpunkt auf außenpolitische Themen.

nachvollziehbare Memoiren

First of all I really DO hope, that Bolton will never see a penny from this book´s revenue. That said, Bolton portrays himself as a tough guy who nevertheless decides never to speak up when given the opportunity. Just as he was obviously too afraid to have to answer questions from Democrats during impeachment. Having been a bureaucrat himself whenever in public service - contrary to General Matthis who actually left his desk and wasn't `all talk no action` like Bolton - it´s impressive how he chooses to discredit bureaucrats again and a again. Another major theme of his book is discrediting General Matthis, even assigning positions hold by the DoD to Matthis´s bad influence long after the general had resigned. It never seems to occur to him that actual soldiers maybe do care about the lives of their comrades and therefore aren't as trigger-happy as Trump-Bolton-like-desk-only-tough-guys. I got the impression that Bolton and Trump are two sides of the same coin when it comes to bragging&grandstanding, though obviously Bolton at least does have knowledge about foreign policy and when not busy diminishing others actually knows what he's talking about.

of a hardline republican. Endlessly going on about and advertising the author's political views and ideas for which Trump serves as a mere supporting cast. Tedious and lenghty. If you are a hardcore republican, you might like it or you might become one listening to this. Good choice if you itend to listen to this in order to fall asleep !

I have not finished the book yet but I am also having a hard time to do so. It feels like the author is just boasting about his story in the white house. Not my cup of tea so far. Maybe if you do not mind it it is more interesting to you than to me.

Edit: I cannot emphasize enough how painful it is to finish this book. The author paints himself as all knowing genius. It might be that I am biased so keep that in mind but very painful to listen to indeed. I will still finish it cause I think sometimes you need to finish things even if you do not like them to get other people's perspectives.
