Loved the style of writing, and the writer’s insistence on leaving the reader/listener hoping to learn more about the backstory of the main characters. At times this book had me so intrigued, I had to stop reading it at night, as I would lie awake wondering about the past lives of the main characters.

If I had to summarize the plot it would sound repetitive, but somehow that didn’t bother me while reading.

I’ve read this once as a young adult (app. 17), without a care in the world, and again after becoming a parent in my 30s. Both times were different but deeply moving experiences.

Although I found the story hauntingly bleak, it left me full of unreasonable hope. This is probably due to the love and spirituality shining its "fire" through all the grey, dark and evil reality of the heroes. In spite of the reading carried out in a (I have to say fittingly) monotonous tone, the book captivated me.
A small issue: the recording has some looping passages that needed to be edited out. maybe this is why it was given for free.

Tom Stechschulte narrating is the true Cormac McCarthy audiobook experience. Would have loved to hear him read Suttree. McCarthy slam dunks the apocalypse genre by creating a disaster too horrible to describe. The novels strength lies in its way of inviting the listener into speculating about the negative space left unexplained.

Second favorite McCarthy novel

The best book about the bond between a father and a son. It moved me to tears when I first read it 13 years ago as well as now when I listened to it.

I couldn't have imagined a better narrator, simply perfect, for all characters.
I understand now why Cormac McCarthy got such high praise for this book. The story telling is so well written, so real and touching.

Amazingly written, perfectly read

Wer die erdrückende Vison Cormac McCarthys aus Draußen im Dunkel kennt, dem wird Die Straße beinah altersweise vorkommen. Auch hier bewegen sich zwei Menschen durch die Schattenwelt, auch hier schafft es McCarthy durch seine meisterliche Beschreibung von Landschaft und Mensch, seine pointierten Dialoge dem Leser das Gefühl zu vermitteln, was es bedeutet, in einer zerstörten Welt zu überleben. Mit ihr ist alles untergegangen, was die Menschheit ausmachte, und geblieben ist nur der Behauptungswille, sich am Leben zu halten, sei es dadurch, daß man die eigene Spezies verspeist oder sich durch die Hoffnung am Leben hält, daß irgendwo etwas auf einen wartet, was einem das Leben erleichtert. Vielleicht wollte uns McCarthy in seinem neuen Roman diese Hoffnung nicht ganz nehmen, so daß das Ende zu verheißungsvoll ausgefallen ist. Man beneidet den Autor um seine Sprache, seine erzählerischen Visionen, sein Vermögen den Menschen als das zu sehen, was er ist: Ein Stück Natur. Ein starker Roman.

Toll gelesen, tolle Stimme, sehr gut verständlich. Story ist bekannt durch den gleichnamigen Film. Sehr gut. Gibt viel zu denken, wie man sich selbst verhalten würde.

There really isn't much more to say. McCarthy's prose is perfect in its sober descriptions of horror and the narrator more than does it justice.

I liked the way the narrator played the roles just enough to make it easy to understand who is speaking, but not too much as to sound theatrical. Also, the book is great.
