Über diesen Titel

Author Jennifer Millikin delivers an emotional and riveting small town, second chance romance about a broken man and the woman who can fix him, if only he'll let her.

I'm a soldier.
A cattle rancher.
A Hayden.

My family's legacy is spread out in front of me, just waiting for me to seize it. If it weren't for one outdated rule, I'd be the owner of the Hayden Cattle Company and my aging father could retire.

When Dakota Wright shows up to buy and develop twenty acres of Hayden land, I see more than a pretty mouth and strawberry blonde hair. I see a way around the decree keeping me from getting what I want.

And, as luck would have it, Dakota has a big problem of her own. We strike two deals: one for the land, and a second that'll make both our problems a distant memory.

It isn't too long before I realize I'm in over my head. I've convinced myself the ends should justify the means, but everything begins to fall apart when my birthright is no longer all that I'm after.

I never thought there'd be anything I could love more than my ranch and my country.
I was wrong.

Turns out, I want it all.
Including her.

* Author's Note: The Hayden Family series is standalone, but for maximum enjoyment it is recommended to start from book one.

This was my first book by Jennifer Millikin, and honestly the reason I even noticed this series were the covers. I mean… how cute are they really?

Then I looked at the tropes and was immediately sold:
✨ small town
✨ second chance
✨ western vibes
✨ marriage of convenience

Basically a combination that normally works every time for me.

The story follows Wes, an ex-soldier who returns home to take over the family ranch. He carries heavy trauma from his time during deployment and fits the classic mold of the sexy, broody, quiet cowboy who doesn’t believe he deserves love.

Then there’s Dakota, a beautiful and independent young woman trying to find her place in her father’s corporate development company while dealing with serious debt.

The book starts really strong with their meet-cute at a party. The chemistry between them is immediate and the tension is palpable. You can practically feel the air crackling between them and expect that inevitable explosion of attraction and spice.

But unfortunately… we never actually get those twelve hours together.

Instead, we jump straight to five years later, which honestly killed a lot of the chemistry that had just started building so well.

Another thing that really didn’t work for me was Dakota’s financial situation. She’s supposedly in serious debt—to the point that she can’t even afford shoes she desperately needs. Yet she has a well-paid job, a wealthy father, and a very rich sister… while donating almost her entire salary to two charities.

The explanation for her debt ended up feeling far-fetched and honestly a bit ridiculous, and the fact that she eventually lets Wes pay off her debts actually made me a little angry.

Now, of course—this is fiction. But it still needs to feel somewhat believable.

I also never fully felt the romantic chemistry between them. There were so many scenes where the timing would have been perfect to create tension and let something really sizzle between them, but those moments were unfortunately not used.

The spice level was also quite low and felt rather mediocre.

The suspense element toward the end added a bit of thrill to the story and helped pick up the pacing, but it wasn’t enough to completely change my overall impression.

As for the audiobook, the narration was actually very well done. Hanna Chiclana and Edward Black both did an excellent job bringing the characters to life and capturing the emotions of the story. Unfortunately, even strong narration wasn’t enough to change my overall thoughts about the execution of the story itself.

In the end, it was an okay read, but it didn’t fully deliver on the potential of the tropes or the setup.
