Über diesen Titel

In the spirit of Alvin Tofflers' Future Shock, a social critique of our obsession with choice, and how it contributes to anxiety, dissatisfaction and regret.

Whether were buying a pair of jeans, ordering a cup of coffee, selecting a long-distance carrier, applying to college, choosing a doctor, or setting up a 401(k), everyday decisions - both big and small - have become increasingly complex due to the overwhelming abundance of choice with which we are presented.

We assume that more choice means better options and greater satisfaction. But beware of excessive choice: choice overload can make you question the decisions you make before you even make them, it can set you up for unrealistically high expectations, and it can make you blame yourself for any and all failures. In the long run, this can lead to decision-making paralysis, anxiety, and perpetual stress. And, in a culture that tells us that there is no excuse for falling short of perfection when your options are limitless, too much choice can lead to clinical depression. In The Paradox of Choice, Barry Schwartz explains at what point choice - the hallmark of individual freedom and self-determination that we so cherish - becomes detrimental to our psychological and emotional well-being. In accessible, engaging, and anecdotal prose, Schwartz shows how the dramatic explosion in choice--from the mundane to the profound challenges of balancing career, family, and individual needs--has paradoxically become a problem instead of a solution. Schwartz also shows how our obsession with choice encourages us to seek that which makes us feel worse.

I can fully recommend this book to anyone feeling overwhelmed by all the choices we face in today’s day and age.
Be a satisfizer, not a maximizer!

Really good book! With many insights and relevant life hacks. I will listen to it again

Many interesting & relevant information

This book can bring lots clarity on how we think and react at everything. We are nothing but our choices.

One of the best book I read

Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten. Bitte versuche es in ein paar Minuten noch einmal.

but also quite repetitive at times, could have been a bit shorter. well read though

Good

I liked the research they presented but was disappointed by the practical advice they gave in the last chapter

Interesting but gets repetitive after a while

I thought it is an interesting and very common topic but with regards to content it was just plain boring. I pushed myself to listen at least to half of the book but it didn’t get any better.
There’s no informative input nor is it entertaining. Very disappointing!

Much less than expected

Nope. At best, it’s 8 hours of quoting just a few psychology studies ending up with common sense advice: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and “choose your battles” are the sum of this book’s response to a modern world with expansive choice. Far worse, the book draws the horrific conclusion toward the end that societies with arranged marriages might be better off because they have a lower incidence of depression (I really hope I got that wrong). The Tedtalk was food for thought, but if you want to dig deeper into the subject, you might be better off listening in at the cracker barrel than reading this book.

Nothing New

The book is very descriptive, has many redundancies, only a few conclusions... Schwartz' Ted Talk on this topic is rather enough.

Disappointing

I bought it after hearing about it in the 2004 ted talk by the author. I was intrigued, felt like he recognized a problem that I myself had also felt.
But the book was so repetitive, offered little value over the gist that you could also get from the talk.
One anecdote, study and example after the other, it never stops.
At one point he said something like "you might be struggling to finish that book that you bought but aren't enjoying - why do it?" when he talked about sunk costs. I really felt like that - but listening to this book. At the end, I used 2x speed to get through it, just to check it off my list.

Not much more interesting than the Ted talk
