Beneath the smooth, swan-like progression of Elly Griffith's sentences there is a lot going on. She is utterly in control of her material, and the machinations of the plot are never allowed to swamp character development, sense of place or the creation of atmosphere. She is a witty writer: the sturdy legs of a toddler on a swing, for example, are said to be "kicking the sky." If only all history mysteries could be as good as The Midnight Hour.
Griffiths writes with verve and wit, and has an unflaggingly keen eye . . . deliriously entertaining

Nach einer Einführung der Autorin, hätte ruhig selber lesen können, wird die neue Stimme eingeführt. Nach einem Mann, liest nun eine Frau weiter.

Zu Beginn war ich begeistert, doch ab Kapitel 21 fand ich die Geschichte zunehmend verworren, die Stimme war nahe an einschläfernd und dass immer mehr Hauptakteure auftauchten, half nicht.
Ich hörte die Kapitel mehrmas nach um sicher zu gehen und habe manches doch nicht verstanden (wer ist Danny der plötzlich mitermittelt?).

Die Reihe wird immer mehr zur Emanzipations- und Emma-, Meg- und Samshow. Die Männer werden immer farbloser.
Fehlt noch das Auftauchen von Ruth Galloway!

Grosso modo hat es mir gefallen. An Aufregung fehlt es nicht. Aber irgendwie fehlte etwas und liess mich nicht in Begeisterungsstürme ausbrechen.

I enjoyed the last book of the series very much and the more female perspective and it reminds us of what was allowed and wasn‘t and possible for women just seventy years ago and puts life and where we are at into perspective again. At the same time it is a lovely flowing criminal story which carries you with it, but isn’t too bloody or horrible as some others. I simply enjoyed listening both to the narrator‘s voice and the story and to know what happened to the characters of the series.

As I don’t want to spoil the book for you- the only criticism was a tiny Teile at the end which I didn’t like that much. But oh well such things happen… enjoy!
