Über diesen Titel

The heart-warming new novel from the author of The Secrets of Meadow Farmhouse and The Perfect Christmas Gift. The ideal next read for fans of Cathy Bramley, Rachael Lucas and Heidi Swain!

Elsie Martin may lead a quiet life, but working in her beloved local library is enough to make her happy. After all, books have always been her armour against the world. So when the library is threatened with closure to make way for a new housing development, Elsie knows it has to be saved – and that, despite being painfully shy, she needs to lead the campaign to save it.

Jacob Yardley thinks he’s doing the right thing by building a new affordable housing development. Why shouldn’t local people be able to buy a house in the place they grew up? Having to leave his own small hometown broke his heart. Plus, people don’t really use libraries anymore, do they?

As Elsie and Jacob clash over the future of the library, sparks begin to fly. Jacob is falling back in love with books and libraries – could he possibly be falling for her too? And will Elsie be able to save the library that means so much to her?

Painfully disappointing

Frizzy hair does not a personality make. Elsie‘s character is as flat as a carrot peel. As someone who’s the same age as her, I kept laughing at her lines of thought. She comes across like a much older, yet not particularly complex person. I don’t know if she’s supposed to be a „pure naive librarian“ or something, but honestly, she’s just incredibly boring.
She suffers from insomnia for years but never seeks help from a medical professional, not even while away at uni in a bigger city where she’d have access to a broader spectrum of doctors.

Onto Jacob, Does he only ever interact with his dad? Is that his only social contact? No friends? No life? Aside from his ex girlfriend who gets mentioned three times to make A Point and solely exists as tension between him and his dad, of course. Ugh. He felt very one dimensional. I don’t care if he has feelings. Action speaks louder than words.

This turned out to be most forced romance ever. The narrator keeps repeating how they haven’t been attracted to anyone in a long time but never gives proof. And how could they? The two barely interact.

Never once do they discuss (and reject) alternative locations for the library. It’s always all or nothing, right from the get go. Much like this romance, this too felt contrived and lacked imagination.

Side characters were okay for the most part (an actual queer couple! Yay, we love to see it!), but their subplots didn’t impact anything.
And don’t get me started on the sudden loss of Elsie’s fear of flying. It gave me whiplash.

Don’t waste your time and money.
