The queen of science fiction’s trailblazing novel about a planet full of genderless beings

A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary’s mission to Winter, an unknown alien world whose inhabitants can choose—and change—their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter’s inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so, he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters.

Exploring questions of psychology, society, and human emotion in an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of science fiction.

Having listened to The Left Hand Of Darkness based on recommendations, but with no prior knowledge of the story, the author, or notably the year of the firdt printing, I found the story to be captivating and utterly timeless. In exploring a different culture (or arguably two) though the eyes of a narrator largely misunderstanding it's intricacies, the world is being developed in beautiful details and ever increasing complexities. There's a lot of balance and nuance to everything happening, largely avoiding the good and bad arguments and inviting thee reader or listener to examine the shades of grey, both in the actual story and the allegories to real life.

Do yourself a favor and skip the afterword, full of complaints about the story not being fully what the afterword's writer wants it to be - while at the same time narrowing the scope of the world and interpretation. The foreword is a much better insight into the authors thoughts on her written work.
