Über diesen Titel

The New York Times bestseller—for fans of All the Light We Cannot See and The Tattooist of Auschwitz!

“An irresistible tale which showcases the transformative power of literacy, reminding us of the hope and sanctuary our neighborhood bookstores offer during the perilous trials of war and unrest.”—KIM MICHELE RICHARDSON, author of The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek

August 1939: London prepares for war as Hitler’s forces sweep across Europe. Grace Bennett has always dreamed of moving to the city, but the bunkers and drawn curtains that she finds on her arrival are not what she expected. And she certainly never imagined she’d wind up working at Primrose Hill, a dusty old bookshop nestled in the heart of London.

Through blackouts and air raids as the Blitz intensifies, Grace discovers the power of storytelling to unite her community in ways she never dreamed—a force that triumphs over even the darkest nights of the war.

“A gorgeously written story of love, friendship, and survival set against the backdrop of WWII-era London.”—JILLIAN CANTOR, author of In Another Time and Half Life

“A love letter to the power of books to unite us, to hold the world together when it’s falling apart around our ears. This fresh take on what London endured during WWII should catapult Madeline Martin to the top tier of historical fiction novelists.”—KAREN ROBARDS, author of The Black Swan of Paris

I don't really understand how this does not have any written review yet. I listened through it in almost a single session. The story captured me instantly and the way Ms. Maarleveld read it was so wonderful yet again. She gives each protagonist their own recognizable voice and even acts out their characters so splendidly, I felt they were all coming so alive in my mind.
The story itself shows how valuable books are in times of dispair. How they keep us sane and balanced in times when things and situations topple around us. And it does not matter if we read them with our own 2 eyes, or have them read out to us, like they were in this story, and like they are in the form of audio books.
The way a little book shop and its' guardian angel become a safe haven for an entire community of people shaken and struck by the horrors of war. The way the stories within the precious books enable these people to flee from the rubble and debris that once was their life, if only for a short time.
In my case audio books have kept me sane through the past 3½ years after my back surgery gone wrong. They have been my way of "travelling" to other places and other times, to be part of worlds I may never be able to see for myself.
I really loved this little novel about "The Last Book Shop in London" very much indeed and can only hope that other people may feel the same way about it. Great Thanks to Madeline Martin for creating it, and to Saskia Maarleveld for making it come alive so splendidly! 🙏🏻💖
