With its somber introspection and psychoanalytic underpinnings, "The Lament" perhaps resembles the intense character probings of Anton Chekov’s influential predecessors - Fyodor Dostoevsky and Nikolai Gogol - more than Chekov’s typical dealings in irreverent humor and situational irony.
