Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize 2022

A Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick.

A top 10 Sunday Times best seller.

Shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award 2021.

A rich, magical new novel from the Booker-shortlisted author of 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World.

Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree. The fig tree witnesses their hushed, happy meetings; their silent, surreptitious departures. The fig tree is there, too, when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, when the teenagers vanish. Decades later, Kostas returns—a botanist, looking for native species—looking, really, for Defne. The two lovers return to the taverna to take a clipping from the fig tree and smuggle it into their suitcase, bound for London. Years later, the fig tree in the garden is their daughter Ada's only knowledge of a home she has never visited, as she seeks to untangle years of secrets and silence, and find her place in the world.

The Island of Missing Trees is a rich, magical tale of belonging and identity, love and trauma, nature and renewal, from the Booker-shortlisted author of 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World.

    Learning to admire trees

This book is about the most important things in life: love, nature, loss, resilience and hope. I admire the author’s marvellous skill to describe things and feelings in such a touching way. Her characters are wonderfully created. One could fall in love with them and wishes the story would go on for as long as possible. They make you believe that such people could even exist in real life. I love this book and thank Ms Shafak for making such a wonderful gift to her readers. I wish everybody who reads it, really deserves it! The two speakers are perfectly chosen and did a great job. I couldn’t have wished their performance to be better, We’ll done! Thank you!

    Boring as hell

My God. What a boring book. The audio is also annoying. One of them is overdoing it. It just goes on and on about trees. Maybe later it changes but honestly I don't want to bother anymore with it. So tired of overly promoted books that are ridiculous.

    Interesting

History, love, magic. I would have loved this if it didn’t include some gruesome details about birds dying, not to mention humans.

Another wonderful book by Elif Shafak

Heartwarming and informative. I learned about the history of Cyprus as much as trees. A wonderful story.

great story not so great performance

Loved the story! The writing was very good as well. As a Cypriot in diaspora, I had tears almost the whole time..
The performance was good as well. I don't know about the Turkish-cypriot accent, but the greek-cypriot accent was just.... greek.. I promise you that no greek-cypriot would speak English like that, which in turn fuels the false narrative that Cypriots are either Greek or Turkish.. we are neither.. we are Islanders.
