"[Narrator Julia] Whelan's performance is unforgettable in this darkly romantic fantasy about one young woman cursed always to be forgotten.... Her depiction of the darkness is smooth with a low cadence, capturing listeners' attention and their heart strings." (Booklist)

In the vein of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times best-selling author V. E. Schwab’s genre-defying tour de force.

A life no one will remember. A story you will never forget.

France, 1714: In a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever - and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

    I liked it

In summary it was a very nice book. A bit repetitive sometimes (so many charcoal black things) and some annoyances like at some point Addie sums up all the languages she speaks and one of them is Swiss, which is not a language...
The speaker was mostly pleasant, I think her interpretation of Luc was a bit over the top. I found it a bit annoying that in dialogues of people speaking French, like Addie‘s parents, she gave them a French accent (the german conductor on the train on the other hand was allowed to speak normally)

    Timeless,beautifully written,unique in its class.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a combination of realistic fiction and magical moments weaved together with romance, with a little of historical, fantasy genre. V.E. Schwab, author of of the Bestselling Shades of Magic series returns with this timeless, beautifully written and unique in its class story. There are moments like its a fantasy fairy tale and then it leans to modern-day romance. I would say, after finishing the novel, romance is a bigger part of the story. Everything about this novel is Epic. From the characters, the pacing and the perfectly well thought plot. A strong heroine, a romantic inclination gears to appeal to a broad audience. It questions your soul as to the lengths you might go to for love or what you would do and what you'll go through when you are made immortal.
The audiobook is just as magnificent as the novel. Perfectly portrayed, performed and narrated by Julia Whelan.
I still kept thinking about this novel and it makes me smile (inspite the fact it shortly broke my heart and cried 🥲). A real sign of a good read/listen. This is the top of my best reads this year and it would be hard to top it.
This is A MUST READ/LISTEN before you die, novel. I would give it 5x5 ☆'s!

    Großartig, brilliant in jeder Hinsicht

    Wundervoll, intelligent,philosophisch, meisterhaft.

Perfekt.

most pretentious book i ever read

like seriously how hipster/ artsy/queer cliché can you get :D. I normally read lmore straight forward books so that's new.
Still it's kind of interestingly written and the story in itself is good.
And it's interesting to get a view in that type of world.

    Wundervoll, romantisch, spannend. Philosophisch.

Best performance in best story for a long time

Ignore the comments that start with words like: "Great Faustian story". This is simply the best book I've read in years. It's a non-linear plot with mini turns and twists. it's full of surprises and insights. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

    Shallow, unremarkable kitsch

What a waste of time this book was. The story could have been told on less than 50 pages, but instead is blown out of proportion by an endless parade of stereotypes, kitschy tropes and foreseeable “twists”. The three main characters are bloodless paper cuts, the supposed heroine Addie is unremarkable and not very likeable. She goes through 300 years of life, but nothing really ever seems to happen to her, and during all those centuries, she fails to go through any relevant personal development as a character. The antagonist (the god of “darkness”) also seems to be a completely superficial and predictable idiot, which coincidentally seems to be the only remotely plausible explanation why he would fall in eternal passion for such a shallow person as the main character. Their “conflict” feels entirely artificial throughout the entire story, and their story arc can basically be extrapolated 10 minutes into the book. Boooring.

Based on the glowing reviews, I expected a gripping book with an unconventional take on a classical trope (the Faustian bargain) and complex, opaque characters. But this novel is shallow, predictable, full of cliches and at times extremely cringeworthy.
