My German Review: Zunächst einmal sei gesagt, dass es sich nicht wirklich um eine Mörder-und-Opfer-sind-irgendwo-isoliert-Geschichte handelt. Die Stadt ist in Gehweite und nach der Entdeckung der Leiche ist auch die Polizei ruckzuck da.

Hat man schon mehrere Thriller dieser Art gelesen/gehört, erscheinen die Charaktere sehr schablonenhaft - nichts Neues hier.

Als Hitchcock-Fan hat mich die Prämisse interessiert und die Referenzen waren auch das einzige was ich am Roman mochte. Man hat aber das Gefühl, dass hier einfach Potential verschenkt wurde. Niemand wird unter der Dusche ermordert, niemandem werden die Augen von den hauseigenen Krähen ausgepickt.

Und die Art und Weise, wie der Besitzer des Hotel dargestellt wird ist auch ärgerlich. Vielleicht wäre das in einem Roman vor 30 Jahren noch passabel gewesen, doch in Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass Film-Fans in den letzten Jahrzehnten von lichtscheuen Bewohnern von Mutti's Keller zu Youtubern mit Millionengefolgschaft wurden und Genrefilme zu den erfolgreichsten Filmen aller Zeiten gehören, erscheint Alfred Smettle wie ein Rückgriff auf überholte Klischees.

My English Review: Wasted potential full of tropes... First of all, it's not really a murderer-and-victims-are-isolated-somewhere kind of story. The city is within walking distance and after the body is discovered, the police is there in no time.

If you have read/heard several thrillers of this type, the characters seem very stereotypical - nothing new here.

As a Hitchcock fan, I was interested in the premise and the references were the only thing I liked about the novel. But you get the feeling that potential was simply wasted here. Nobody gets murdered in the shower, nobody gets their eyes pecked out by the house's own crows.

And the way the owner of the hotel is portrayed is also annoying. Maybe that would have been acceptable in a novel 30 years ago, but given the fact that in the last few decades film fans have gone from being shy residents of mom's basement to YouTubers with millions of followers and that genre films are among the most successful films of all time, Alfred Smettle feels like a return to outdated clichés.
