Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

From start to finish, I loved everything about it. The story was so well written and performed that it made me tear up and sometimes even cry outright. The characters aren’t perfect. The story isn’t nice. But it’s real.
It made me feel, it made me think. Within a few hours it made me connect with the characters and care for them. It’s gonna stay with me for quite a while.
I’m really happy I picked it up.

Amazing experience

This novel honestly made me laugh and cry and gave me something to think about... Also I already miss all of the characters in it and Bahni Turpin did an outstanding job bringing them to life!

Listen to this!

This book truly checks all the boxes for me:

- GREAT CHARACTERS
some endearing, others not so much, but all believable and all very much human (yes, this includes the dog)

- AN ENTANGLING STORY
I don’t want to spoiler anyone, so I’ll just say that while this story is written with so much empathy that it plays on all your heartstrings, your intellect will never feel unchallenged and the writing style makes it as easy to follow as it makes the experience enjoyable.
I am truly impressed with how heartfelt and authentic and non biased this story is (Star complains about the media only shows the worst parts of her home, while to her it’s also caring neighbors, the best red velvet cake and Mr. Lewis Barbershop).
It’s hard to get this across without giving too many examples and therefore spoilers, but the variety of reasons and motivations really is one of the points that stand out to me in this book.

- A STRONG MESSAGE
I LOVE a story that somewhere somehow hasn’t given up on making the world a little bit of a better place.
With a main character that attends a bougy private school in the suburbs but lives in the ”ghetto” this book paints a picture of black and white living in the US with its differences and injustice - without making the painting black and white. (pun intended)
The story wants to raise awareness for inequality and the racism that resides on top of the minds of some and in the back of the minds of many.
It wants to make a change and will have you rooting alongside the lead characters for all the right reasons.

And finally A WONDERFUL READER.
Bahni Turpin did an amazing job in making this audiobook a joy to listen to and cry and laugh along.

Gripping, heartfelt and believable

Ich fand's super spannend mal eine ganz andere Perspektive einzunehmen, hier aus der Sicht der 16-jährigen, schwarzen Starr.
Geschichte war mitreißend und überzeugend, allerdings manchmal sehr schwarz weiß...

spannender Einblick

An already amazing and heartbreaking story was made even better by the narration. I was completely immersed in it and heard it non stop from morning till night. The fact that almost 6 years have gone by since the book came out but the ground reality is still pretty much the same breaks my heart just a little bit more.

Narration takes the story to another level
