Über diesen Titel

It began with a simple note: a letter of rejection delivered to Miss Temple on her maid's silver tray. But for Miss Temple, her fiance's cruel rejection will ignite a harrowing quest for truth, plunging her into a mystery as dizzying as a hall of mirrors. Thus begins Gordon Dahlquist's spectacular literary debut, a novel of Victorian suspense that shatters conventions and seethes with danger and eroticism.

Miss Temple's pursuit soon leads to a remote, forbidding estate where all inhibitions are laid bare and shocking discoveries lie behind its closed doors: men and women in provocative disguise, acts of licentiousness and violence, heroism and awakening. But she will also find two allies: Cardinal Chang, a brutal assassin with the heart of a poet, and a royal doctor named Svenson, at once fumbling and heroic; both of whom, like her, lost someone at Harschmort Manor. The search for answers hurtles this unlikely trio from elegant brothels and gaslit alleyways to astonishing moments of self-discovery and ever-mounting peril. For the conspiracy they face, a perverted alchemy of science, religion, and lust for power, is terrifying beyond belief.

This is a wonderful audiobook, It deserved 5 stars if it would have been the unabridged version. GW Dahlquist has written a fantastic debut novel set in the Victorian era on the verge of discovering the first strokes of the industrial revolution. Some, however, pursue this industrialisation for less nobler purposes. The characters are memorable, each with their endearing qualities, to be loved or hated. Highly recommended. Looking forward to the sequel!

Alfred Molina is a master storyteller

I tried to listen to the book parallel to my work at home or while having a walk but I got lost many times in the story. It is not easy to follow though the story is very interesting.

Interesting but complicated

Based on reviews I had seen beforehand, I was really looking forward to this book and story, as the idea of the dreambooks and cards sounded interesting to me. The reader did a marvellous job in expressing the different accents and voices, so I enjoyed him very much. However, the story became less and less interesting and appealing to me as it unravelled its rather brutal course. Sometimes, I got lost in the storyline. This may be due to two facts: on one hand, I intended to get to the end of this audio book as quickly as possible (and it may not have had my fullest attention), or on the other hand, the abridged version cut out some important scenes that would have been needed to fully understand all connections. Even though I was glad to learn that the main characters survived this ordeal, however, I will not read the sequel.

I expected more
