Die Story ist vielschichtig und stellt unter anderem auch für mich dar, welche negativen psychologischen und soziologischen Auswirkungen soziale Ungerechtigkeit mit sich bringen kann auf beiden Seiten der Hierarchie. Das Motiv der Mutter, der Schwiegertochter in spe nicht zu vertrauen, scheint mir etwas naiv und schwach angesichts der Tatsache, dass wir in einer Welt entfesselter Materie leben. Doch die Charaktere sind als Opfer der Schicht, der sie entspringen, sauber gezeichnet. Wer könnte das auch besser als eine britische Autorin. Der Schluss ist auch sauber vorbereitet, allerdings very british. Lesenswert, wenn auch für mich kein Buch, dass ich nicht mehr aus der Hand legen konnte.

Nette Geschichte mit überschaubar vielen Personen, nicht wirklich eindeutiger Charakterisierung und etwas zu viel angedeuteten Handlungssträngen und vorhersehbarem Verlauf.

… are both equally despicable, definitely unbalanced, with no moral standards whatsoever, and the build-up of the two characters is quite good. I found myself literally despising the two main characters. The ending is a bit too cliché to my taste, with a last-minute savior stepping in. I also did not like the omniscient author constantly changing her point of view to explain what the characters are thinking and feeling.
Well-read by Antonia Beamish, and on the whole good for a rainy day or a long drive.
