The first of the Lymond Chronicles, one of the best historical fiction series written. The reading is very good, the only problem is the terrible foreign language pronunciation. The French, German, and Spanish is not understandable if you don’t have the book in front of you and that is a shame.

Unterhaltung auf höchstem Niveau! Sehr spannender, historisch fundierter Abenteuerroman voll schwarzem Humor. Nicht einfach, selbst Muttersprachler bezeichnen das Buch als "not an easy read". Ich habe mehrere Anläufe gebraucht, um hineinzufinden, aber es hat sich gelohnt. Man muss sich Zeit nehmen und es sich auf der Zunge zergehen lassen. Die Charaktere sind tiefgründig, die Handlung psychologisch voller Raffinesse, spannend bis zum Schluss. Ein anspruchsvolles Buch, das auch schwierig zu lesen ist. Der Vorleser tut sein Bestes, gelangt aber vor allem bei den Zitaten in Spanisch, Französisch, Latein und Deutsch an seine Grenzen. An den zahlreichen spannenden Stellen liest er zu monoton und vermag die einzelnen Personen nicht ausreichend zu trennen. Trotzdem werde ich am Ball bleiben. Mehr solcher Bücher!
