This is the true story behind the making of a television legend.

There have been many books written about Star Trek but never with the unprecedented access, insight, and candor of authors Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross. Having covered the franchise for over three decades, they've assembled the ultimate guide to a television classic.

The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From the Next Generation to J. J. Abrams is an incisive, no-holds-barred oral history telling the story of post-Original Series Star Trek, told exclusively by the people who were there, in their own words - sharing the inside scoops they've never told before, unveiling the oftentimes shocking true story of the history of Star Trek, and chronicling the trials, tribulations, and tribbles that have remained deeply buried secrets until now.

The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years includes the voices of hundreds television and film executives, programmers, writers, creators, and cast who span from the beloved The Next Generation and subsequent films through its spin-offs: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise as well J. J. Abrams' reimagined film series.

Edward Gross and Mark A. Altmando an excellent job in collecting the different voices and opinions of the people that made Star Trek. It is well structured, engaging and detailed. However, the audio adaption by McMillian Audio shows a somewhat lacklustre attitude as almost every Voice Actor frequently misspells actors or character names, often in a variety of ways. This can easily pull you out of the listening experience even if you're not a die-hard Star Trek fan. This get's the most obnoxious when the actor portraying Winrich Kolbe speaks him with a natural American accent but once it is stated that Kolbe is a born German int he voyager segment speaks the part with a fake German accent.

A captivating Telling of a unique franchise

I can only recommend this book. I've grown up with Star Trek and more or less I live all shows. This book gives a background to the shows that makes them so much better still.

Perfekt for Star Trek Fans!

Like the first part, this is a very well edited, comprehensive oral history. The "full cast" approach really makes this easier to listen to. However, as in the first audiobook, there are some annoying quirks:
1) Do we really need to reminded 20+ hours in that William Shatner played Captain James Tiberius Kirk for every single quote?
2) A pronunciation guide would have done wonders, both actor names as well in-universe terms are at times pronounced quite differently by the various voice actors (e.g. Kazon)
3) Both books starting with a list of abbreviations and a long, dry full credit roll makes for a terrible listening experience. This should have been changed for the audio book, e.g. by referring to a PDF appendix at the beginning and then putting the read out loud credits as the final chapter.

A well-compiled deep dive into Trek history
