Über diesen Titel
In 1532, the magnificent Inca empire was the last great civilization still isolated from the rest of humankind. The Conquest of the Incas is the definitive history of this civilization's overthrow, from the invasion by Pizarro's small gang of conquistadors and the Incas' valiant attempts to expel the invaders to the destruction of the Inca realm, the oppression of its people, and the modern discoveries of Machu Picchu and the lost city of Vilcabamba.
This authoritative, wide-ranging account, grounded in meticulous research and firsthand knowledge and told from the viewpoints of both protagonists, "keeps all the complex issues to the fore...the deeper wonder of the conquest and the deeper horror of its results" (Washington Post).

However, I love this kind of detail, so I‘m here for it. The one minor issue I have is that the book was not adapted for the audiobook format. It extensively quotes primary sources, but when listening, it is often not clear whether I’m currently listening to a quote or not and if I do, where the quote starts and where it ends. It would have been nice to provide some extra information regarding quotes, something which I would assume to be dealt with via footnotes in the print version of the book, but which is largely missing here. Another way of dealing with quotes could have been through the narration, for example by changing the voice while reading a quote. While the narrator generally does a good job, particularly with Spanish and Incan names, he does not use different voices.
Also, there are some references to maps, photos or illustrations, but they have not been included with the audiobook, which is a bit of a shame.
Still , despite these criticisms, I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in the history of the Spanish conquest of Peru and the end of the Inca empire.
