Will Darcy ever grow to love a child he never wanted?

In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth Bennet at Hunsford is disastrous. In Jan Hahn’s The Child, Darcy flees England soon afterward, striving to overcome his longing for her. Upon his return two years later, while standing on the steps of St. George’s Church in Hanover Square, he spies the very woman he has vowed to forget. But who is the child holding her hand?

Darcy soon discovers that Elizabeth and her family are suffering the effects of a devastating scandal. His efforts to help the woman he still loves only worsen her family’s plight. His misguided pride entangles him in a web of falsehood, fateful alliances, and danger.

Will Elizabeth be able to forgive Darcy for his good intentions gone awry? And what effect will the child have on Darcy’s hopes to win Elizabeth’s love?

.... because: Darcy! He is a lying, scheming self righteous ass. He learnt NOTHING from his miserable proposal in three years. He is even worse as a person when they marry.

And theeeeen.... with God's intervention and some rushed connection to the titular child (he had ONE positive Interaction with the child before) he suddenly sees the error of his ways and Elizabeth is in love with him for NO reason and the child calls him Dad.

The whole book his inner monologue is creeping on her. A trope, that I find really making light of rape culture, comes a few times up when he fears to lose control and will "ravish" her. Without consideration that it this point Lizzy is not ready. But it is only thanks to his EXTREME willpower, that rape does not happen!

But really: the worst part is that Darcy is extremely manipulative and wilful.

Btw he also just left his 16 year old sister and estate behind for two full years.

Worse than the average JAFF
