Tokarczuk presents us with a stunningly well researched account , but, above all, very beautiful story

…but that’s probably why I don’t sit in the committee for that literature prize. It’s front to back a rather depressing read. The book is lacking a real insight on the positive sides of religious experiences and the true reasons why people followed someone like Jacob Frank. Which tells me that the author herself has only a very superficial, exoteric (in contrast to esoteric) understanding of christianity, judaism and islam.

The narrators of the book are excellent! I think due to them I listened to the end.

Not sure this is Nobel-Prize material…

An excellent book. Intelligent, realistic, truthful, tender, compassionate. A glimpse into lives in many respects so different and yet so similar to mine / ours. People who were good and bad, kind and selfishly evil. A moving time travel to late XVIII century.

Original, thorough and humane

Da ich aber zu meinem Vergnügen lese, ist mir dieses Buch einfach zu langweilig. Wann immer ein Handlungsstrang interessant wird, wechselt Zeit, Ort und Figuren, und ich erinnere mich nach zahllosen Seiten kaum, wer all diese Charaktere jeweils sind. Es ist ein sehr anspruchsvolles, sehr kompliziertes Buch, eine leider viel zu langatmige und unnötig zerstückelte Geschichte, schön geschrieben aber nicht gut erzählt.
