When a book and a reader are meant for each other, both of them know it....

After the tragic death of his father, fourteen-year-old Benny Oh begins to hear voices. The voices belong to the things in his house and sound variously pleasant, angry or sad. Then his mother develops a hoarding problem, and the voices grow more clamorous. So Benny seeks refuge in the silence of a large public library. There he meets a mesmerising street artist with a smug pet ferret; a homeless philosopher-poet; and his very own Book, who narrates Benny’s life and teaches him to listen to the things that truly matter.

Blending unforgettable characters with jazz, climate change and our attachment to material possessions, this is classic Ruth Ozeki – bold, humane and heartbreaking.

I found this book to be very good. What is extremely annoying though, is how the voices of mother and son are interpreted. Their winey, stressed out pitch set me off. It didn’t do justice to the words. It almost felt sarcastic. Like the person reading them didn’t take their feelings seriously.

The story is great, the voices not so much

... doing women's voices, particularly the mother's, jeez. that dumbed-down, sickly sweet tone set my teeth on edge and nearly made me quit.i think I'd have enjoyed the story more if I'd read it. male narrators have disappointed me lately.

the narrator ...

The narrator does a very bad job of reading the mother, it quasi sounds like parody and destroys the atmosphere the narrative is trying to build.
Could not finish it thanks to that.
For me that guy was definitely the wrong choice in voice actor for this book.

Narrator does weird falsetto for women’s voices
