Was ich seltsam finde, ist, warum der Dialog in russischem Akzent vorgelesen wird. Die Geschichte spielt in Russland, deshalb können wir davon ausgehen, dass die Charaktere Russchisch sprechen und wir die englische Übersetzung lesen (auch, wenn das Buch in Englisch geschrieben ist). Seit wann werden Übersetzungen mit Akzent übersetzt? Das macht keinen Sinn und ist für mich als Russin mehr als schwierig. Wenn die Leserin einen Akzent hat, okay, aber hat sie nicht, denn die Erzählteile werden im akzentfreien Englisch gelesen. Das ist eine Art Nachäffen von Akzenten, die es nicht atmosphärischer macht, sondern mir als Russin das Gefühl gibt, nicht ernst genommen zu werden.
Schade, wahrscheinlich hätte mir das Buch besser gefallen, wenn diese fragliche Akzentsetzung es mir nicht kaputt gemacht hätte.

The way Katherine Arden writes is rich and absolutely magical, and transports the listener/reader into the dark, cold, and brutal world of medieval Russia, into a challenging reality of a young girl coming of age. Vasya's task of coming to terms with her destiny is so captivating and relatable, what with her inner struggle to find her place in a domineering Christian community which threatens to suffocate her natural gift and affinity to the spiritual world. As the story goes, the reader/listener witnesses Vasya growing into her sense of self, a true heroin whose presence transcends the pages. Vasya's strength and determination are to be reckoned with and are inspiring, to say the very least.
If I could describe Arden's writing style in one word, it would be atmospheric. Like Vasya, the reader/listener seems to become One with nature due to the delicate and tender comparisons which reveal its parallels with the spiritual world. The narrator, Kathleen Gati, captivates with her performance and emotion and brings the characters to life.
As for someone who has read the entire series already, I can say that the series gets only better after the first book (and I ADORED the first book). Yes, the first book may be a bit slow at times, but it is ABSOLUTELY necessary for the remainder of the trilogy, its character arcs and its plot development. Katherine Arden is terrific at adding personification and subtle foreshadowing that is marvelous to re-listen to, deepening the already rich messages of the story.
I treasure this series!
