Anna survived the attempt to bind her magic, but Anna and her coven aren’t free from danger yet.

Haunted by her aunt’s death, living in fear of her curse, and fated to love the one man she can never have, the last thing Anna needs is a witch hunt. Now she must conceal her magic once more or risk losing everything.

But when deadly hysteria strikes across the capital, and in her own school, the coven are left dangerously exposed. Delving deeper into the magical underworld of London, Anna and Effie must find a way to work together to protect the coven.

But as the witch hunt intensifies and the hysteria spirals out of control, can Effie and Anna truly trust each other?

The ideas at the base of the story are interesting but unfortunately it is all too much drowning in teen drama. The concept of magic and languages as ways to cast it has potential but sadly is overshadowed by the main story of bi*** fights and hysterias. Anna, Effie and the others are whiney, annoying and weak teenagers who fail to pull tje reader in.. There is no character development, sign of maturity, growth of their powers, or believable plot twists. Effie and Attis are supposed to 'belong to each other' although they both are promiscuous and see sex as a fun part time, they seem to have no romantic feelings, behave sibling-like - yet the curse says two sisters are destined to love the same guy. It seems like a weak attempt to attract a younger generation with lack of traditional standards of love or romance where monogamy might be seen as boring, as well as mere heterosexuality. It's not very credulous that such people would have a problem with this 'love triangle' though, right? - f* the curse, they could probably just be in a relationship all together, Problem solved.. Furthermore, Effie is a pain-in-the-b*** full time and cannot be fathomed to become friends with Anna, even if there were no curse - let alone be sister-ly. Her inner turmoil - if existent - is not conveyed well. Oh and Peter is suddenly all into Anna? Not very realistic at all given their history. Darcy is still super present and annyoing as well..

Overall, there are too many questions, riddles, weird poems and excerpts from witchy books that do not make sense and appear as fillers, thrown in to mess with the reader. Throughout the entire story hardly any satisfying answers or explanations are given. Nothing positive happens - period (with exception of the xmas festivities at Rowan's). It's all about drama, self-pity, intrigues, incredulous storylines and immature girls. No fun scenes, no exciting magic is happening, no 'yes, finally!'-moments for the reader. You get the feeling of watching a bad soap opera with dull scripts and mediocre actors. It all drags along like chewing gum without payoff in the end to see eg. some bad guys punished or at least some satisfying reveal. Even if the sequel (once released) could manage to finally clear up all the 'ilogics', present great character arcs, portray cool magic tricks, be a riveting read and give a satisfactory ending - it would still not be enough. Book 2 even makes book 1 look worse in hindsight, as it destroys the hopes a reader might have had then. There was an outlook and promise of magic practicioning, big reveals on background stories, etc.
Unfortunately, It's all a downward spiral - at the end of book 2 the only accomplishment is having managed to end the hysteria-spell, everything else is even more blurred than before, the ominous 'Seven' are still just that, apparently nobody cares about certain plotlines and loose threads...
Also, the characters are not very likeable and it doesn’t leave the reader to care about their fates at all. You want somebody to shout 'Skip the drama, suck it up and grow up.'
In conclusion, this book might speak to a certain audience but you probably have to love overly dramatic, self-absorbed teenagers who stubbornly keep repeating their mistakes, learn nothing in the process, and apparently are unable to grow - also hate happy endings and love cliffhangers and unsolvable mysteries.

good ideas but dull storytelling with too much teen drama
