And was all the more surprised I enjoyed this one so much. I can’t really say where the grit comes from but it was well done. I enjoyed Gilmore as a character the most but everyone was convincing. It was refreshing to see an adult woman in the middle of life with children (who don‘t play a large role but also don‘t seem like a complete afterthought) who don‘t get killed off only to motivate the mother. It’s the story of someone who wanted to leave their old life behind and start a new, honest one only for the past to catch up. I very much enjoyed the inner conflict that brought with it without turning the characters into simpering fools complaining about the world but remain decisive and do the best they can. I braced myself for the kids to die the entire time and was relieved when that stupid trope was not used.
The ending I am not 100% convinced off with gods taking over responsibility but with Gilmore not part of that inner net, it was alright for me. A lot of politics, interesting setting, faceted characters.
The narrator has an amazing voice and did great work. I especially enjoyed the accent he brought in though I was a bit sad that got dropped later on when the same people travelled with the ships but their accent had lessened or was gone. But well spoken nonetheless

I don‘t normally like gritty stories too much
